Chapter Twenty Six
5/6 November 2054
The Dales, Britain
‘Who the hell are you?’ Frankie was the first to recover, ‘Who sent you? Where’s your authority? And what’s the meaning of this outrage? Get out of here at once!’
The officer, who was regarding Damen, spoke without turning round.
‘My name is of no concern to you, Mister Judd. I have of course the necessary authorisation for this action but as far as you’re concerned our weapons are all the authority you need be shown. Mister van Hool, you have some items which do not belong to you, I think. You will surrender them to me now and come with me.’
Karl pushed his way to Damen’s side.
‘I am a police inspector. Where is your warrant?’
‘Not here you’re not, Inspector Landmann,’ the officer coolly responded, ‘You have no authority in Britain. And I might ask you the same question; where is your warrant card? Travelling without your authorisation, are you? Well so am I, it appears.’
‘Now just a minute, pal,’ Alan pushed through the others, ‘You can’t come bursting in here like this without a by your leave or anything. If you’re the police, show us your warrant like he says.’
‘Sergeant, get them out of here,’ the officer spoke quietly to one of his armed men, who in turn gestured to the other men. Everyone except Damen was herded unceremoniously and under protest at gunpoint out of the room. Damen heard the babble of angry and frightened voices retreat down the hall as he was left alone with the officer in the suddenly quiet kitchen. The officer sat down and gestured Damen to be seated too, but Damen remained standing as a small protest against the man’s high-handed manner.
‘When you have explained who you are and what you want, I will see if I can help you,’ Damen said confidently enough but he felt quietly apprehensive. The officer helped himself to a drink of beer from a bottle on the table before replying.
‘You broke into Philson’s Hull facility and removed many files from the comsystem without authorisation,’ he stated, ‘And in doing this you used a PCom belonging to a Philson executive who we now believe is dead. You’re in big trouble, Mister van Hool. Armed robbery and murder are serious offences.’
‘Then turn me over to the police and I will explain everything at my trial.’
Damen was defiant; he could see no other course of action open to him. Whoever these people were, they weren’t the police or they would have identified themselves. Damen became bolder.
‘Or are you afraid to turn me over? Doesn’t that fit in with your plans, mister whoever you are from Kittcorps Special Security?’
The officer was taken aback, discomfited for the first time. He lost a little of his cool.
‘Captain, not Mister, mister,’ he snapped back, ‘And just what do you know about Kittcorps makes you think we’re with them?’
‘I know altogether too much about you,’ Damen replied evenly, ‘Over the last two weeks I’ve got to know far more about you people than I would have liked to.
